ABOUT
Presented by the University of Arkansas’ student-run literary publication, Hill Magazine, Lost on Earth explores the complexities of human relationships, along with the innate humanistic characteristics to which many consider as the “flaws” of human nature.
The magazine was created with a team of writers, editors, photographers, and myself as the sole designer and creative lead. I strived for cohesiveness through a unified color palette, typographic system, and planned photoshoots. With our team of photographers, each photoshoot was planned to carry similar visual themes and pertained visual narratives that coincide with their respective stories.
To further enhance visual interest, I experimented with text layouts that deterred away from rows of identical text columns. As the pages flip over, each text box was designed to flow seamlessly into the next, creating a sense of rhythm that is also supported by the transition between page colors. Included within this type system, I also experimented with the relationship between page headers, body texts, and pulled quotes. I utilized layering techniques that involved changes in opacity and scaling to create contrast and emphasis, rather than including visual elements, to break up along the text heavy spreads while remaining focused on the stories.
